What is it?

The Bazaar aims to provide a livelihood for residents of the community by collecting, recycling and reselling community donations.

Every day, our team collects donations of computer equipment, furniture, shoes, appliances and other goodies from wealthier communities in Fortaleza. After a quick sprucing up, these items are sold at the bazaar, mostly to other residents of Pirambu.

This trade in second-hand benefits both the people involved in the project as the clients of community residents in Pirambu (Christ the Redeemer, Our Lady of Grace).

How does it work?

  • Who are the donnors?Funcionamento do bazar
    We receive donations from individuals and families as well as companies and other institutions.

  • Who are the cilents?
    Customers of our bazaar are mostly residents of the community (the greater Pirambu area), whose purchasing power is generally quite low.

  • The collection of donations
    The donation is picked up by one of our two trucks, so the donor only has to call, and we’ll be on our way! Interested parties can arrange collection with us by phone or through the online form. Our team collects the donated objects in your home /company/institution at the arranged time.

  • Repairs
    Upon arriving at the warehouse, the objects are appraised and sorted in the different workshops. The workshop determines the condition of the items and, if necessary, perform repairs. If objects are not recoverable, our recycling workshop salvages viable parts for resale.

  • Sale
    Every Saturday, from 8am to 12pm, the bazaar is open to the public on Rua Tomás Gonzaga, 226 - Cristo Redentor. The workshop is available to advise and assist customers. The main categories of objects sold are as follows:
    - Appliances: stoves, refrigerators;
    - Hardware: complete computers or parts;
    - Clothing: pants, shirts, blouses, shoes, etc.;
    - Toys: cars, dolls, balls, books etc.

Casa do Saber

What is the Casa do Saber?

The Casa do Saber is a Social, Educational and Cultural community enterprise arising from the action of Emaus Amor e Justica, and it’s the hub of alternative education in the greater Pirambu area.

At the Casa do Saber we aim to strengthen learning and community integration with society, improving education in three areas: cultural, technological and social. We offer such services as tutoring, computer classes, capoeira, dance, music, and art courses ...

We serve mainly children and youth, but we also offer activities directed at adults.

Crianças do Saber

This project offers supplemental education for children aged between 6 to 14 years old. To participate in the program, all children must be properly enrolled and regularly attending school.

This program aims to help children (6-11 years) and adolescents (12-14 years old) in vulnerable situations to complete their homework. Students are provided the support they need to develop research and organizational skills.
Capoeira, instrument building and musical workshops, information technology, regional dance, summer camps...

We also offer pediatric psychological services.

Jovens do Saber

This project provides educational and pre-professional programs for youth.

Preparation for the IFCE (Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Ceará), aimed at young people aged 15-18 years.
Training young people in the areas of information technology and entrepreneurship to act as community mobilizers through  digital inclusion. We seek to encourage young people to use social entrepreneurship project and technological resources to give back to their community. This project was developed in partnership with SECITECE (Department of Science and Technology of Ceará), SEDUC (Department of Education of Ceará), UFC (Federal University of Ceará) and FUNCAP (Cearense Foundation to Support Scientific and Technological Development).
Partnered with local company Cecomil, this project aims to train eight young people in vocational courses (Web-design and hardware) and help them transition into the labor market.
Courses are offered for both youth and adults to develop basic English language skills. The project is conducted in partnership with the CLEC (Foreign Languages Center of Ceará).
Preparing youth and adults to enter University, in partnership with the IFCE (Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Ceará).

Comunidade do Saber

In this project, the Casa do Saber is used for special events such as birthdays and adult workshops (administrative assistant course, cooking course etc.), community service projects and other eduactional endeavors.

Aims at social inclusion and fostering a love of reading. Children, adolescents and adults get an hour of free internet time with which to read a book and make a summary. This project is offered in partnership with the Cooperativa Pirambu Digital.
With the support of the Municipality of Fortaleza and the Ministry of Communications, telecentro offers free public access to information/comunication technologies. The Telecenter offers computer courses and free use of equipment for a certain time, usually with mentors to aid the user. It is a space for collective use, which can also accommodate collective projects developed from the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).
This project works with the active support of a lawyer who voluntarily attends and provides services to the entire local community and families who are unable to afford an attorney in labor, criminal, judicial causes. We aim to help citizens understand their rights as well as their duties.
This project aims to raise the environmental awareness of the community we serve. Each student of the Casa de Saber brings at least five kilograms of recyclables (glass, cardboard, PET bottles etc) per month to offset the operating costs of the Casa. Through this program, we aim to instill in our students a sense of environmental responsibility as well as clean up the streets of our neighborhoods.

Creche Verde

Creche Verde (Green Preschool)

The neighborhood of Pirambu is historically marked by low levels of education, poor housing and poor environmental awareness reflected in the dire pollution. Moreover, many women with low income that do not have access to public services for daycare have no choice but to leave their children alone during the day while working.

Therefore, Emaus plans to build a sustainable preschool of 329 m² which provides free care to 60 children aged 2 to 5 years, Monday through Friday. We aim to create a unique space that focuses on environmental and nutritional education for low-income families in the community of Pirambu.

Favoring the use of local resources, the project combines thousand years old techniques and innovative technologies to ensure the environmental friendliness of the construction, as well as the day-to-day sustainable use. Many of the best eco-friendly practices will be used: optimized natural lighting and cooling, adobe walls, green roof with built-in rainwater harvesting system, bio-septic tank to treat black waters, in order to protect the environment and the health of both attendees and neighbors.

The project also includes a personalized coaching service for each woman to help her manage both her career and her role as a mother, and thus promote the socioeconomic autonomy of women in our area.

Recursos necessários

This project would not be possible without the support of our partner, the Lions Club Guarani of Fortaleza that has contributed the lot, a 601m² area located in the heart of the neighborhood. However, the construction of this daycare is an investment that requires significant financial resources. We are currently looking for partners who can support us financially in order to help this project live up to its potential.

Origin of the project

Emaus has been battling the causes of poverty, and attempts to bring more dignity and education to the community of Pirambu. Despite the great strides we’ve made through the Bazaar and the Casa do Saber,  however, we still lack the sufficient resources to address some of the most significant difficulties the community is currently facing.

Therefore, we are trying to improve and expand our social work, offering services to make a greater social impact through the construction of the Pirambu Social Complex, a truly comprehensive community space that will offer various services and support systems to our neighbors. Creche Verde is the first stage of this complex.

Casa da Criança

What is Casa da Criança?

Casa da Crianca (Children’s House) is a free community daycare center for children between the ages of two and five, and aims to provide psychological, educational and social support for the children of the community. Lead by social educators and qualified caregivers, children get involved in activities that lay the foundation for their future schooling: they play, paint, draw, and build their first friendships. In order to improve the overall health and nutritional status of children, we offer them three healthy meals a day.

Casa da Crianca also aims to promote the socioeconomic autonomy of mothers, offering them peace of mind and the confidence to leave the home in search of employment in the knowledge that their children are well looked after.

Current Situation and new project

Between 2009 and 2011, the Casa da Crianca welcomed 30 new children. Unfortunately, since January 2012, we no longer have the proper facilities to house the Casa and have had to go on temporary hiatus. However, we intend to use all the experience gained at the Casa de Saber for our new project, Creche Verde, a sustainable preschool.
