House of Knowledge
The Casa do Saber is a project of the emaús community Amor e Justiça, which especially want to support the young population of the city district Pirambu. It wants to help in the professional formation, starting with homework help and lessons for children and adolescents of socially weak families, in addition to the public schools. 60 children, divided in two classes, take part and also recieve a meal at school. Additional courses for adolescents are offered in cooperation with the local technical faculty CEFET. They teach especially technical and computer skills and prepare for the university level.

Emaús’ human rights work also takes place in the Casa do Fazer. Free law advice is offered in order to give the poor population or illiterates a chance to access their rights.

It is part of Emaús’ philosophy to immediatly relieve the pain of those who suffer, as well as fighting its causes. The Casa do Saber is to been as the realization of this philosophy, working for social integration and against one of Brazil’s greatest injustice: the „distribution“ of education.

The objectives of the different projects taking place in the Casa do Saber.

01. Homework under supervision

The education of 60 children is improved, in addition to the lessons at the public school.

02. Kid Link Esporte Clube

Its objective is to minimize the difficulties of 24 young students from 12 to 18 years of age.

03. Lessons medium level

Also provides additional lessons for older students.

04. Pré-Pró

Prepares for university level and the entrance exam at the faculties. Most important are subjects like Portuguese and Mathematics. The 12 students do the 7th grade and come from the district Pirambu.

05. „Capoeira ao Alcance de Todos“ – Copoeira in everyone’s reach

The interest for sports and the cultural identity shall be awoken by the brazilian martial arts sport Capoeira

06. Human rights department

The access to the civil und human rights is improved by free law advice.

07. „Emergency for Solidarity“

Emaús helps in case of „emergencies“ to relieve the suffering of the poorest. These can ask for fast and uncomplicated support, and Emaús will donate things like wheelchairs, construction material, beds, stoves or buy medicine.

08.“BILA“ – Library and Lan House

BILA is a free Lan House, which wants to awake the interest in reading as well as basic computer skills. To use the internet one hour it is necessary to spend one hour reading in the library.
